The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has announced a major milestone in the digital transformation of the Maldivian economy, as PayPal and Ooredoo Fintech partner to introduce PayPal services to the Maldives.
This landmark initiative represents the fulfillment of the Government’s pledge to expand access to modern and convenient payment systems, enhance support for digital wallets, and bring leading global digital payment platforms to the Maldives. It paves the way for Maldivian businesses, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and content creators to fully participate in the global digital economy.
The Government has prioritized addressing the regulatory, technical, and commercial challenges that have historically limited international payment services in the Maldives. The planned introduction of PayPal reflects the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening the country’s financial infrastructure and fostering an environment that enables innovative digital solutions. Once operational, Maldivian consumers will be able to receive international payments, while local enterprises gain new opportunities to expand their reach into global markets.
“The Ministry extends its appreciation to PayPal, Ooredoo Fintech Maldives, the Maldives Monetary Authority, and all stakeholders whose collective efforts have made this milestone possible. The Government remains committed to introducing additional world class financial technology solutions that will further advance the Maldives’ journey toward a connected and inclusive digital economy”, a statement released by the Ministry said.
