Government Sets Sectoral Benchmarks to Boost Economic Self-Sufficiency

The Cabinet has decided to establish benchmarks for various sectors to work towards different targets next year as part of efforts to increase economic self-sufficiency, according to Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.

The Minister made the announcement while speaking at the 63rd anniversary celebration of Radio Maldives.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has designated next year as the Year of Productivity for the Maldives, and the Minister highlighted the important role of media outlets like Radio Maldives in communicating this initiative to the public.

The current government has set a goal to transform the Maldives into a fully developed nation by 2040. To achieve this, the country needs to maintain annual economic growth of approximately 5% to 6%, based on current economic self-sufficiency levels and per capita income targets, the Minister explained.

Minister Saeed emphasized the need to cultivate a nationwide commitment to achieving developed nation status by 2040. He noted that just as the tourism sector has progressed, other sectors must also advance, and this requires accurate information and reliable news coverage from the media to support national development.
